How much should I feed my cat?

This calculator applies the veterinary energy formula: Resting Energy Requirement (70 × kg^0.75) times a life-stage multiplier, divided by your food's calorie density. It's more accurate than the bag's chart because it uses your cat's actual weight and your specific food — the number that matters is total daily calories, however you split it between wet and dry.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I feed my cat?

By calories, not by the cup. A cat's daily energy need is its resting requirement (70 × weight-in-kg^0.75) times a life-stage factor — 1.2 for a typical neutered adult, 2.0–2.5 for kittens. Divide by your food's kcal-per-cup (or per can) and split into two or more meals.

How many calories does a cat need per day?

A typical 10 lb neutered indoor adult needs roughly 200–250 kcal/day. Kittens need far more per pound; overweight cats need a carefully supervised reduction. Enter your cat's weight above for its specific number.

Wet food or dry food?

Both can be complete and balanced. Wet food's higher moisture supports urinary and kidney health, which matters for cats; dry is convenient and calorie-dense. Many owners do a mix. Either way, feed to total daily calories — this calculator gives you the target.
